Pupil Premium Grant (PPG)
The coalition government introduced the Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) in September 2011 with the purpose of increasing achievement, attainment and aspiration for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, specifically;
To reduce the attainment gap between Pupil Premium students and their peers (this can be measured against our own non-PP students but also the national average for non-PP students).
To improve student progress, especially in English and Mathematics.
Tolworth Girls' School & Sixth Form (TGS) receive a Pupil Premium Grant for each child who is entitled to receive Free School Meals or who has been entitled over the last six years, and for 'Looked after Children'. We are allowed to allocate the funding as we see fit in order to meet the aims above and are held accountable for the impact of this funding.
-
We always spend it for the benefit of the target group of students and it often benefits other students too.
Drawing on research evidence (such as the Sutton Trust toolkit) and in-school evidence.
Understanding the importance of ensuring that all day-to-day teaching meets the needs of each student, rather than relying on interventions to compensate for teaching that is less than good.
Appointing a designated Senior Leader who has a clear overview of spending and interventions.
Ensuring that classroom teachers know which students are eligible for the PPG so that they can take responsibility for accelerating their progress.
Having a clear policy on spending the PPG, agreed by Governors, shared with all staff members and outlined on our website.
The aim of Pupil Premium funding is to reduce the gap between pupil's eligible for Pupil Premium and those who are not.
-
1- The Academy ensures that a designated senior leader, an Assistant Headteacher, plus the Headteacher and Senior Leadership team have a clear overview of how the funding is being allocated and the difference it is making to the outcomes for students.
2- The Academy reports to the governing body on a termly basis regarding the progress, behaviour and attendance of the students.
3- The Academy also ensures that class and subject teachers know which students are eligible for student premium so that they can take responsibility for accelerating their progress.
4- The interventions we have set up are to tackle a range of issues, e.g. attendance, behaviour, factors outside school. Therefore, the Academy focuses on INSET on supporting students, effective teaching and learning, strong careers information, advice and guidance, literacy and numeracy support, targeted subject support, post-mock exam booster classes, good facilities for supported self-study, mentoring, counselling and further enrichment.
5. Sutton Trust Research shows that one of the most effective interventions is related to meta-cognition and self-regulation. At TGS we are proud of our Pastoral and Support programmes and Curriculum Enrichment Days, which supports students to develop the skills they need to learn and for later life. These skills are often those that may have been missing from home lives, when disadvantage occurs, so it is important that they are taught in school.
6. Feedback has also been shown to have one of the most positive impacts on student progress. At TGS we have an effective and differentiated feedback system that allows all learners to make good progress and learn how to improve their work.
7. We allocate our best teachers to teach our KS4 Maths and English booster sessions.
8. The Academy thoroughly analyses the performance and progress of students in all subjects, with a particular focus on English, Maths and Science. Regular monitoring takes place at both department and pastoral level, with senior leaders monitoring that suitable interventions are in place.
9. The Academy never confuses eligibility for Student Premium with low ability and supports students to achieve the highest levels possible.
10. The Academy draws on the latest research and works with relevant bodies outside the Academy to ensure that we are drawing on advice and best practice in supporting those students eligible for Student Premium.
