Celebrating Black History- cornerHouse Community Arts Centre
The Art, Music and Dance Departments were delighted to be a part of the Celebrating Black History event at The cornerHOUSE Community Arts Centre in Douglas Road, Surbiton in October. The centre gave us the whole of their display space to celebrate the wonderful art work of our talented Art students. On display was a selection of Year 8 identity artworks inspired by the Black American artist Kehinde Wiley. Together with some striking artworks by GCSE and A-level Art and Textile students.
On Saturday 15 October the artworks complimented a day of events and performances including the Tolworth Girls' School & Sixth Form Choir and a recorded dance performance by Year 9 students. These all ran alongside performances by amazing poet Stephen Walrond, singer song writer Dread Fury, Kimberley’s Royal Steel Band and an evening of free comedy supported by Whole Lotta Comedy. The enigmatic host Brandon Palmer really got the audience celebrating the wonderful performances.
Many thanks to Nicky Newberry and Elaine Blackmore for inviting us to take part and to the families who came along to support the event. We hope to continue this link for more events in the future.
